Context
During my self-directed co-op placement at RemitBee, I collaborated with a team of interns to develop an upcoming Fintech product. I was the primary User Experience Designer and piloted all stages of the design thinking process, collaborating with Business Analysts and other User Experience Designers.
**Due to a non-disclosure agreement, I cannot share the full details of this project. However, I am happy to share more about my learnings and experience!
empathize & define
At the beginning of my co-op, I partnered with a Business Analyst, conducting research on the global and national Fintech industry to identify any market gaps and product opportunities. From our research, we found a few key factors:
Fintech products and Neobanks are on the rise, with over 14 countries worldwide implementing open banking
Canada has begun the process of implementing open banking, and is expected to complete implementation in 2026
Financial struggles that Canadian newcomers face include a lack of knowledge about Canada's banking systems, a lack of credit history, etc.
We presented our findings to a board of shareholders and stakeholders, including a product pitch, and moved forward with market research on five prospective competitors and creating surveys to gather data on our target demographic (both internally with existing RemitBee customers, and externally).
After analyzing over 150 responses from our surveys, I drafted three personas through various stages of Canadian immigration to create representations of our product's users, including their needs and expectations, motivations, and frustrations.
ideate
As the primary User Experience Designer, I spearheaded the branding for our product, collaborating with another User Experience Designer to create a colour palette and font pairing. I also created a design system (only focusing on iOS requirements for the scope of the co-op term) encompassing components, colour and font styles, an icon library, and spacing guidelines for our team of three User Experience Designers, as we were working on product mock-ups in tandem.
I designed mock-ups for three out of the five major product features, along with several minor user interaction flows. Below are some sample wireframes showcasing how new users would go from onboarding to adding product offerings to their account.
prototype & test
I was the sole User Experience Designer who worked on prototypes and user testing to identify any product gaps and UX/UI improvements. I created a prototype to test four major user interaction flows, and recruited three internal employee participants that best matched our target demographic to remote test. The user testing data (which included pre-test and post-test questionnaire data and user test recordings) helped our team to learn more about how Canadian immigrants (especially those who struggle with English and financial jargon) interpret what our product can do for them. Two out of three participants were confused about what certain product features did, leading us to further simplify copywriting within the product or add tooltips to define certain financial terms.
Currently, due to pending business partnerships and the ongoing project timeline, the product has not been released to market yet.
